Exclamation 636 fork replacement

ok everyone knows that the 636 forks suck. so im looking for a replacement set to put on my bike. i was thinking about a set of zx10 forks but i dont know if they will fit or not and i dont know if they are having the same problems or not. does anyone have a clue if they will fit lenght wise and diameter wise. also are the calipers interchangable. and what about wheels size and axle diameter? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 636 fork replacement

zx10 forks are to much of a pain!
07 636 forks is what im using on my 03 04.
The zx10's your going to have to ether find another tripple to use or press the stering stem out and use a 03 04 stem in it. Thats about the time the tripple snaps and you have to get another one. Untill you get lucky pressing it out.

are you sure they actually wobble or is it normal fork tolerances that is moving?

when you hold the brakes down and push down on the forks EVERY FORK IN THE WORLD will have play in them. they have to, if there wasn't play then the forks wouldn't move in and out. between the inner and outter tube bushings there is always play because you can't machine something to perfect fitment or it wouldn't move.

if it's doing that then nothing is wrong with them, that's all forks. to test to see if your fork lower legs are moving on the inner tubes you have to take the forks off the bike, put the inner tubes in a vice and then try to move the lower legs. that is the only way to find the small ammount of play in the lowers on these forks. If you can see them moving by holding the brakes, then the forks are going to break any second....it's too hard to tell unless they are so far gone they are falling apart with them still on the bike.

and no, 636 forks aren't junk.....people that don't maintain them are. so there have been a small handful of instances of them breaking and suddenly they are junk? look at all the things that break on gixxers and people still ride them all the time. way more junk than 10 sets of forks fracturing out of 500,000.

Re: 636 fork replacement

are the 07 forks any better than the 03-04 forks. is the lower slider wall thicker or are they the same. thats the problem with the forks. the wall thickness is too thin and when under stress they distort and it destroys the threads in the axle holders. then they just snap. anyway so the 07 forks will just slide right in? im guessing ill have to use an 07 front fender also? what about the front axle and wheel? and where besides ebay can i find a set of theses forks because i cant seem to find any on there.

Re: 636 fork replacement

05 and newer are showa forks. completely different company. 05-06 bolt right up into 03-04 triples. you have to use the 05 fender, but i think you can still use the front wheel setup on the 03-04.

and i know all about the forks. i build suspensions for race bikes....i'm not just another uneducated stunt rider playing a guessing game and making false assumptions based on the fact that a handful of setups have broken out of the 1/2 a million on the market. If there is a true problem, don't you think kawasaki would deem it dangerous and do a recall? yes, yes they would....the ammount of instances it has occoured in the situations it has occured doesn't warrent a problem.

i maintain tony's forks on his 03 636....i know they are solid good forks. If i didn't then you wouldn't see me hop on his bike every time we go to ride and rock it. it doesn't worry me one bit being on that front end. i've seen many other parts fail on bikes due to neglect that have caused serious injury and death, but you don't hear people talking about that. you know why? because 2 people on here have told their stories and everyone else is now scared. when it becomes hundreds, or more than half of the forks, then i'll become scared, but until then i'm going to keep stunting on a completely safe front end because i pay attention to maintenance and check the forks before i do anything on them.

Re: 636 fork replacement

As far as the thinkness of the forks on not sure. But they feel 100 times better for stoppies and feel all around better.
Ya they slide right in the 03 04 top and lower tripple.
Youll need.
the forks , 05 06 07 636 rotors, zx10 rotors will work too. and im almost certain zx14 rotors will to.
The front fender
And thats it.
As for the front axle i cant remember witch one i used. I had 5 front ends in my garage at the time and cant remember. But i think it was the 03 04 axle but dont quot me on that one.

Re: 636 fork replacement

the 05 06 forks will slide right in your 03 but you will need the fender and the rotors off the 05 06 every thing else will fit

true true, 05 (showa) forks are much better. showa does a better job at the valving. i like my 05's forks over tony's 03-04....but not for safety reasons, for the feel.

Re: 636 fork replacement

ok heres what my forks are doing. i can hold the fork on my work bench (the lower slider) with one hand and forearm and grab the part that the axle slide through and i can wiggle it a little bit. i really have to look to see it but i can see it barely move. what should i do. should i try to tighten it or what . i dont have any fluid leaks or anything it just wiggles a little and i hear like a creeking noise when i do an endo ( right after i apply the front brake and the weight starts to shift to the front) also what kind of maintenance can i do to ensure my forks will last and not break.

I would really just like to find a set of 07 636 forks if the lower slider is thicker. if anyone knows where i can find a set please let me know.

Re: 636 fork replacement

Ebay is the only place i know of.
As far as the forks you have. Personally and i said personally i would not use them. Cause for one yeah there have only been like 4 people that have had the problem with them braking that we have herd of a i can tell you im not going to be the 5th person!
I am one of those people that would rather spend some money to be sure cause all it takes is one time.

06 636 on one
And 07 636 on the other. The 07's are the limited ones i don't know if there different but they feel better than the 06 but that could be because they are new.

E-Bay $356 shipped.

But i got lucky! There have only been one other pair on there and they went for something like $545 shipped.

T-Neck is running the 07's on his bike too.
