Re: Denting a 04' 600rr tank

my buddy used a heat gun and a rubber mallet. It's easy to put a hole in it and ruin it though. The key is to heat up the plastic and set the mallet sideways on the plastic and push down firm but not hard. The contour of the the sideways mallet works out perfect. If you plan on doing this I would plan on either getting a damaged one off here in the classifieds or ebay and practice first! I will tell him about this thread and see if I get him to help you out.

Re: Denting a 04' 600rr tank

deadblow for the metal
heat gun for the plastic, make sure you heat the bottom so that you dont ruin the paint up top toooo much...like burn and bubble marks
heat it up, put it on the tank QUICK cause it ****** cools down fast as hell
then lots and lots of re-shaping...6 hours for me...

Re: Denting a 04' 600rr tank

this is what i did...

grind down the inner part of the ring that sticks down...heat it evenly and then throw it on the bike...then what i did was stand on it and as i was doing that i would move my feet around and heat it and then apply pressure where i thought was needed

Re: Denting a 04' 600rr tank

thanks for all the post.. do u guys find that the fuel tank (metal) is the same shape as the plastic cover cause it looks like i gotta bang in the metal first then hope the plastic will take shape.. i know its a dumb question but i'm only gonna have one chance to do it

Re: Denting a 04' 600rr tank

I do remember my buddy dented his metal tank first then put the plastic on and stood on it(like said above) to get the base for his, then he went to rolling the mallet on the plastic to get the final shaping. It took forever and 2 tank skins but the final result was great. That white one in the pics above is one off the better jobs I have seen.Whatever he did....LISTEN!!!!!
