Well, as many of you know.....it's time for me to hook up a hand-brake. While looking through on of my new catalogs, I came across several thumb brakes for racing applications. Have any of you used one at any point in time? If so, what did you think? I kinda like the idea of having brake coverage immediately upon clutch-up, instead of using one finger for both brake and clutch. What might the negatives be?

Bill D is using a THUMB THROTTLE not a thumb brake.

 

Lack of feel.... lack of power.

people did it back in the 80's its not like its a new idea. and its not apparently a good one either cus its never become popular

I tried back in 2003 putting on one. It doesn't have the leverage a normal hand brake assembly has in order to lock up the rear.

and your thumb does not have the endurance your other fingers do.....plus its a pushing motion not a pulling.....your thumb could not handle it and your hand would be dead!

just set it up like everyone else has it, and learn to use index finger on clutch and middle finger on hb. in my opinion, thats the best setup.

 

or use your middle finger on the clutch and index finger on the hb like i do

yeah 2,400 thats got to be a typo.. thats just crazy. Looks like your thumb could slip off that tiny little lever.. I think I would rather have my hand rapped around a lever than poking at it..

 

I had the gp-tech thumb-brake installed last year - didn't work for stunting
I got it for sale if you want to buy it and try it. haha

 

they do have 2 new ones now that are supposed to be better for stunting...

the 1st model that's been out for years states on the website that "it is designed to NOT lock up the rear wheel". It's been known that it sucks for stunting for years now.

But I wouldn't mind tryin out one of the newer ones w/ brembo internals and a 1/2" bore... I do have much better things to spend $540 on this time of year though.

I bet (if it had decent leverage and the feel was good) that they'd be real good for tank coasters and combo coasters... especially w/ the HOHEY 4 piston rear bracket.

I've got no prob w/ SS coasting off the limiter all day long, but when i've got alot of pull on my arms (hc, spreader) i cant work the handbrake for ****... i always end up pullin it a lil too much as i pull the clutch in, or letting the clutch out a lil when i try to get off it.

I have short weak little sausage fingers, and have trouble hangin on w/ only 2 fingers
