636 transmission problems?

i have an 06 636 and it seems like its getting more and more difficult to shift smooth. it has a habit of not goin to second very easily like and a couple times it has popped out of second back to neutral. shifts real hard sometimes like snapping into first from neutral when the idle is up even when im just shifting regular street into higher gears. bike really hasnt been abused that bad, this is my 4th bike that ive stunted and the only one thats shifted like this. prob has like 5k stunt miles on it, more street than lot. anyone else have any problems with theirs, known issues?? i thought i read somewhere that these bikes have problems with shift forks gettin bent, i dont really know **** about transmissions. what kind of money does it cost to fix **** like that?

Re: 636 transmission problems?

I ride an 05 636 and my bikes seems to do the same thing. once and a while stunting, or just riding, ill shift from 1st ta 2nd and it will slip right into neutral and stick there until i slow down. otherwize trying to shift causes it to grind and eventually slip into gear. not sure wats causing this.

Re: 636 transmission problems?

ya it sounds nasty as hell to. when its like in between neutral and second. you can just hear it hittin the gears. i hate it when it does it but dont know how to stop it. sucks when ur tryin to take off at a light and u shift and if gets stuck in neutral makes you look like u cant ride but its really the damn bike

Re: 636 transmission problems?

its called a neutral finder something kawasaki came out with. if your going slower than 15 mph itll do it. so if you going slower than 15 put it in first if faster ride in second

Re: 636 transmission problems?

There known for doing that i have it happen when i just sittin there with the clutch held in and it will jump out of gear and also when im doing fastest wheelie at starboys it was at the end on my wheelie right be4 the end of the track and it jumped out of gear be4 being clocked.
It has happend a few time like that every time im chasing the wheelie and there is alot of strain on thr tranny it happens ..

Mines an 03 04 636

Re: 636 transmission problems?

I had to rebuild my tractor transmission once cause third gear was gone from all the mashing into gear without a clutch. The gear looked like someone took a heavy grinder to the teeth. Half of them were pretty much gone while some others were sharpened down to nothing... Also usually the teeth are like domed shaped for better shifting, these were like tiny ridges.

But nobody cares so I'll stop talking.

Re: 636 transmission problems?

though wheeliest was being a smartass, my bike does shift smoother if i drag out first a little bit... not stupid long, but you know what i mean. never had a prob poppin outta gear though. tonight i noticed it didnt wanna downshift one time, its like the shifter got pushed down, and stayed down. once i slowed down a little bit though it was alright again. weird ****...

Re: 636 transmission problems?

Sounds like a bent shift fork.. early Yamahas had the problem real bad.. they get that way from heavy clutchless shifts and general transmission abuse.. the gear dogs wear out causing them to not sit in the shift drum right and so it pops back into neutral

If you ride it like this it'll keep getting worse

Re: 636 transmission problems?

I never liked the feel of the Kawi gear box on my 636, so I installed a Factory Pro shift kit. Since then the bike shifts much smoother and more positive, and I barely ever use the clutch to shift up or down anymore....I can up and down shift without the clutch at any speed with this kit installed, I couldnt do that before...
