Help:F4I ticking noise

At about 5000 rpm the top-end sounds like it's vibrating. It doesn't mess with the performance because the bike pulls like a banshee, but it is annoying and I was wondaring if it's something I have to worry about.

Re: Help:F4I ticking noise

get a adjustable cam chain tensioner.. Ive never done it myself, but it looks like an easy swap. Once the adjustable one is in, you never need to change it again. Just need to adjust it.

Re: Help:F4I ticking noise

it's two bolts ...

take out the old one and install the new one by first backing the adjuster bolt out a little so you can get the two mounting bolts in

then turn the adjuster bolt in by hand till you feel resistance

lock the lock nut down slightly while the bike is warming up 170 180 degrees

then back the lock nut off and back the adjuster bolt out till it rattles then turn it in till the rattle stops and then go a half turn more and lock down the lock nut

p.s i like to cut a grove in the adjuster bolt with a die grinder or a hacksaw so i can use a screwdriver on it and a wrench on the lock nut

Re: Help:F4I ticking noise

Don't all F4i's make that noise? When I got mine in 04 it did and I searched the internet and found an F4i forum. Must of them said that there's did it that it wasn't a big deal. So I put another 10,000+ miles on the bike and still ride it without even touching the tensioner. Only bad thing is that it's really annoying and it was right around 60 mph on my bike.

Re: Help:F4I ticking noise

Its just the end on the stock tensioner that makes the noise Not the chain. So if you can live with the noise youre fine. But mostly everyone goes with APE.

Re: Help:F4I ticking noise

it's the chain slapping the tensioner in and out and the longer you leave it that way the more slack your chain gets because when you engine brake and get back on the gas you are snatching your chain and your cams

and they in turn are getting pulled to one side and thats bad for your cam bearings which in most cases is your head.....

I have put 2 cam chains in 2 different 636 motors cause the chain got stretched all the way. I had a Honda that I left alone when it was rattling and it eventualy jumped timing and grenaded

Re: Help:F4I ticking noise

I don't have to do anything besides unbolt the old one and put the new one in. My manual says something about pulling the bolt on off the top of the ccr out first and then making a key out of 1mm steel and rotating it a 1/2 turn before I take it off. Anybody?
