homemade cage

I started to make my cage today, then I had a problem. How do I get the
part of the pipe that attaches to my frame on there. Tried welding washer to
end of pipe so bolt would hold it tight and weld wouldn't stick to round pipe before it blew a hole it washer? Got any tips or other ways how to do it. Also do I use stock bolts or should I get longer ones? I am using 3/4 pipe.

Re: homemade cage

try thicker washers and grind an bevel on the end of the pipe for better weld penetration. your pipe may not be thick enoff / high enoff quality if it wont take the heat from the welder.

Re: homemade cage

instead of washers, use some flat steel no thinner than 1/4 or maybe even as thin as 3/16 drill your bolt hole in it and then center the hole in the pipe before you tack it. and make sure you got enough overhang on your homemade "washer" to be able to weld around and have it stick

Re: homemade cage

are washers welded to the end of the pipe the common way of doing this?
or is there a different way?

Re: homemade cage

washers arn't the best becouse its hard to find ones with the proper alloy mix but it is the easyst way. Mikes way would be the best but a lot more work. What ever way you go make sure to bevel the pipe before welding for a strong weld

that's the nicest way of doing it, but if you don't have acces to a lathe it would cost a little money

dude if you cant figure out that you need longer bolts for your cage you should just buy a cage and bolt it on.

nice, lathe's are the ****. expecially old ones. I haven't used one newer than the late 30's or early 40's. that's where you get the quality from.

here's pics of the homebuilt cage I did for my f4I. the cage had a previous life as a jeep roll cage and was left in a junk pile. I saw it and I was like "THAT'S MY CAGE!!!"
