Going over the bars - 636

My bike has shut off and sent me over the bars 5 times , 3 times within the last two weeks for 4 different reasons and one time I'm not sure why. once the fuel pump took a ****, once my wiring harness grounded out and blew an ignition fuse, and one time I hit the kill switch but last night it shut off for no apparent reason. The switches were still on when i picked it up. I put a new subframe on and it had a new tip-over switch.Maybe this could be the problem? Just wondering if anyone has had this problem with a 636? It always seems to happen when I am doing a spreaderThis is starting to get painful.

Re: Going over the bars - 636

im on a gsxr, but i had that problem earier this year, it shut off during a seat stander at about 35 and i almost went over, then i got tossed during a jump-to spreader (at Pyschofest, got it on film and you can see that i wasn't close enough to the bars yet to have hit the switch, it died mid jump)

I ran codes after the first time, said the fuel pump relay was bad, replaced it. After the second time i couldn't find anything wrong... so i wired my on/off switch to be permanently on, hasn't done it since.

I heard that the 636 tip-overs were hard to set off, but maybe that was it?!?!

I would go over your wiring harness really good to look for exposed/frayed wires.

does it ever give you a FI warning light??? if it does, run codes on it, (i think you can do that with the 636's too)

Well I did have a wiring issue but that was no question because it blew a fuse and it wouldnt start. THis time it started right back up. I have never had a problem with my tip-over before but this one is new off of a zx6rr. . Unfortunately i don't have guages so not sure if my f.i light is on but i will run codes to check.

Re: Going over the bars - 636

ok, the fact that no fuses blew and it started right back up makes me think its not a wiring issue!

BIG question here, try to remember, Did you turn the key off then back on before you restarted it, or did you just pick it up and leave the key on and start it up??? If you simply picked it up and it started, then it isn't your tip-over, because once they are tripped, they need to be re-set, and the only way to re-set them is to turn the key off then back on.

The fact that its NOT a 636 tip-over makes it very suspect in my book... I would start there.

If you have guages, find a way to mount them... i think it's important to have guages ESPECIALLY on a stuntbike... they not only give you rpms and other info, but let you know if something is wrong with an FI light and also very importantly give you temperature, important for me because i do a lot of shows and that means a lot of burnouts and i try to not overheat my bike! then you can see if you are getting an FI light and run codes

Yeah you are right. My fan is wired to the key and it was still running and it started right up. I'm gonna swap the tip over switch regardless just to be safe and I will mount my guages and go from there. Thanks alot for the info.

Re: Going over the bars - 636

yeah, i would still swap the tip-over if i were you. Phil (Sillyneck) told me that all you have to do is open up a 636 tip-over sensor and dump the guts out, then put the cover bak on it, hook it up and you are good to go with a modded tip-over. I would do that just to be sure, then you have the right one that is modded too.

hmmmm, not the wiring, not the tip-over, definately get the guages on there... oh and check your connections, make sure they are all clean and secure, might even want to dissconnect all the injetion and relays, shoot them with some cleaner and lube in them and reconnect them. I had a fuel pump relay that was corroded and made it shut off... ended up cleaning the connector really good and getting a new relay.

your welcome bro

Re: Going over the bars - 636

did that too, and mine was during a HC scrape. motor gurgled right as I touched the bar, bike slapped down HARD, broke the windscreen and all, luckily i didn't crash... now i always keep it nice and gassed up! lol

forgot to mention that i didn't know it was low cause my fuel light doesn't work cause it's the wrong guage cluster for the bike... its a '02 1000 guage on a '03 600 motor.

This may sound stupid but check the battery cables. i didn't tightin the ground all the way one time and i looked like they where on all the way and when i was a 12 it would just shoot off. it took me like 1 hour find it.
