2005 Suzuki GSXR 1000 Frame Alert
Not sure if its a repost but if you have one I guess you can't be told 2 many times. a 75 mph wheelie setting down hard could really mess you up http://www.1tail.com/2005_GSXR_frame/
2005 Suzuki GSXR 1000 Frame Alert!
Apparent frame defect may have contributed to crash
May 21, 2005
While competing in a race for AMA sanctioned Motorcycle Roadracing Club Dan Sallis (MRA #63, AMA Superstock #48) crashed in turn one while Pikes Peak International Raceway. Dan was riding the 2005 1Tail.com Suzuki GSXR when the front simply washed out entering turn one. "I am not sure what happened because I was taking it easy and just cruising. I was comming up on a lapper and setting up to pass him on the outside when the front just went away." said Dan. Dan was in 3rd place when the crash occurred and he had been in running as high as 2nd in the race.
Upon taking a closer look at the damaged Suzuki frame it is clear that the weld was inadequate as indicated by the photographs below. The break in right down the middle of the weld. Futhermore, when one takes a closer look at the weld it is clear that the weld had zero penetration for the majority of the welded area. "This all makes perfect sense now. This thing came apart on me at the top of turn one just as I was counter steering at well over 100 miles an hour entering the turn."
Current owners of the 2005 Suzuki GSXR 1000 may want to have their frame welds inspected for defects.
1Tail.com will present the broken frame for inspection to the director of roadracing for the AMA at the event at PPIR later today.

Re: 2005 Suzuki GSXR 1000 Frame Alert
as these bikes get lighter and lighter for racing, we that plan on abusing them and testing their strength limitations will need to produce more and more stunt specific parts... frame braces for example (just like subframe braces)!!! the market for aftermarket stunt products is getting bigger by the day (or year i should say cause every year these bikes get weaker!)

Re: 2005 Suzuki GSXR 1000 Frame Alert
Yeah every bike should be able to smash into a concrete wall at 100MPH + and still be ridable with no frame damage
Wake up people the whole bike is Fed up of coarse the frame snapped at the weld! Bikes are designed to go fast not crash into walls fast and not get any damage. Who cares about the frame anyways the forks, tripples, front wheel, rotors, bodywork and who knows what else are done............Its finished

Re: 2005 Suzuki GSXR 1000 Frame Alert
"I swear the frame snapped in half before I crashed into the wall" Im gonna use that one next time I loop my bike. I'll just blame my crashes on the maufacturer and say the frame cracked in half as I was riding, smashing into a wall had nothing to do with it.

Re: 2005 Suzuki GSXR 1000 Frame Alert
There was a Photo guy who witnessed the crash and said that it was in one pice before he hit the WALL so it was just a High speed crash that broke the frame.....NO NEED TO WORRIE there are just rummors floating around that cause such probs.....

I read it somewhere and I dont think your front wheel shatters and your fork tubes dont get ripped off unless your bike smashes into something (wall). Maybe he just balled it up but I think its pretty lame that hes trying to say he crashed because his frame cracked in half while in a turn.

Re: 2005 Suzuki GSXR 1000 Frame Alert
Well, no matter what happened the weld is cold. It has no penetration to the material. It's just a seam on top of the material. Usually weld should be even stronger then material. that's because weld area Is twice as thick as the surrounding material. and welds tend to heat the surrounding material thus making it weaker, it usually brakes next to weld, not at the weld. Not when it's done right.
How can cold weld stand up to 5-10 years of hard usage. endos and wheelie landings? It can't.

A good freind of mine crashed his new 1000 on the street and the same exact thing happened. The whole bike blew apart as well but that was something that stood out in my mind... They are still one of the sickest bikes i have ever gotten to ride though

Re: 2005 Suzuki GSXR 1000 Frame Alert
I'm sure the sumbish didn't crack from layin it over in a turn, however, that weld is pure garbage. There is in fact ZERO penetration, that was the part that was sketchy to me. That's just a bead of metal all the way around the frame.
