O vs N????

Today I was thinking, while I was workin around the aircraft and lookin at the tyres, about the nitrogen they use in the tires. Nitrogen doesn't expland and contract like oxygen does with heat and cold. Also nitrogens molicules are bigger and lighter than oxygens. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to put nitrogen in my bikes tyres. I have a few bend in the rear rim and the air(oxygen) likes to leak out when I drop the pressure for 12's. If I put nitrogen in it would be harder(in theory) for it to go flat or I could go the non-cheap route and by a new rim. Anyone want to comment?

yea someone tried to sell our shop a nitrogen machine for airing up tires.. supposedly has a lot of benefits.

Hey, I have an idea, get on the internet and try to find out how much nitrogen is actually in the air that you are putting in your tires. You might be surprised. Unless you are plumbing straight oxygen into your tires?

The only benefit I could see is less moisture. N2 in bulk? I assume you get a canister and hook it up for the machine? N2 will be free of moisture and prevent condensation and corrosion so yes there would be a benefit from that point of view. My

I dont think that having a gas with a larger molecule will keep it from leaking out of your tire. I can assure you that any hole that will let an oxygen molecule through but not a nitrogen molecule through is so small that you wouldn't have to refill the tire for months. Molecules are pretty darn small. I'm no expert but just a thought.

Nitrogen is used in tires to avoid blowouts. Even at as low as 13,000' you notice a huge difference in almost any gas expention. Nitrogen allows a steady pressure in types=less tire wear. A blowout on landing sucks.

Re: O vs N????

Put an inner tube in your tire, you'll never loose pressure.

Darius uses helium in his tire??? What a cheater!!!!

Re: O vs N????

you can get tanks of nitrogen from any local welding shop and hook up your own regulator to the tank to fill tires. It has no moisture content like compressed air from a compressor. but from then on out you should only use nitrogen. if you top of at a gas station or something it all goes to pot.

Looks like nobody believes you, or can read. If I remember from junior high school, air is about 75% nitrogen.
