Re: knee and elbow pads
I wear FoxRacing shin/knee pads, for $14 from a Honda shop I can't complain. They fit well under loose fit jeans and have some gouges in them already so they have definetly prevented a few minor injuries. I wear them anytime I am on my bike and I completely forget they are there.
I am thinking of trying the ICON knee/shin pads this year, they are more expensive at about $75 but they look like they are less likely to move down your leg in a wreck. If so, they would definetly work better since the Foxracing one can move fairly easily.
I like having shin protection, knees hit easily and open up and take time to heal, but shins can be sore for months even if there is no breaking of the skin.
Here are the pads I use.
Also since other protection has been mentioned.....
I use an armor jacket. It has a back protector, shoulder, elbow, forearm, and chest protection. Nice jacket for about $100 and it offers alot of protection. I wear it under hoodies right now and it works great.
Here is that one.
I got mine off Ebay.
I have never really felt restricted from either of these items but I may just have coughed it up to wanting more protection in the beginning and got used to them. It certainly is more restrictive than if you don't wear any gear, but I don't heal as fast as I used to so this was the way to go for me.
Hope this helps.

Re: knee and elbow pads
I got some shin/knee pads for bmx a while ago and am going to start wearing those whenever I ride. I always wear the armored jacket and gloves and boots anyways, might as well put those under the jeens
