As Sergeant Dragus pursued him, a truck pulled into the roadway in front of his patrol car at the intersection of Pennsylvania and Northwest Expressway. Sergeant Dragus swerved to avoid a collision but struck a utility pole and a tree. He was transported to Oklahoma University Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries several hours later.
The motorcyclist wrecked the motorcycle, and fled on foot, approximately one mile past where Sergeant Dragus had crashed. He was located and arrested later in the day. The driver of the truck also left the scene but was later located. On January 26, 2007, the motorcyclist was convicted of second degree murder and aggravated eluding. He was sentenced to a combined 50 years in prison.

Here is a little more information rather than the skewed view of one person! There are many more factors involved...before making the general automated response of FTP, Why are we defending some motorcyclyist just because he rides a bike. I say F-_-K him, he is making everyone elses life harder when he steals a bike, initiates a pursuit with the police, because of his continuing criminal activity a cop dies...and this guy M. Timmons wants to blame the cop for making a bad decision....well this is finially a case where mabee everyone who wants to run, can see first hand that running can catch up to you when things go wrong and your life will be over.....this is the risk you take!
This was a bad situation all the way around but the answer to this is not to monday morning QB the COP but the criminal....Read this small summary closely and mabee you will understand more....
In most states if you are committing a felony crime and a death occurrs because of your felony crime the LAW already Blames the Criminal for the Death!!!! Not the COP for trying to apprehend the criminal and losing his life in the process.
*****, U should remember the Trooper in Volusia that died a few years ago (Trooper Haywood) who died trying to catch up to the bike, had a blow out and crashed...The motorcyclist got 15 years in that case.

the biker in fl that got caught was counties away we he got caught. i believe there are cool cops and ******* cops and 90% in fl are dicks

Dude i kinda disagree, that's like hitting a homerun and smoking a grandma and killing her......The biker had no intentions of hurting/killing anyone.....i agree to put his *** in jail, but this is rediculous to waste his life to for something nearly ALL of us have done....it's straight up

What if a cop pulled you over for speeding and then a car slammed into him while stopped. Do you get blamed for the death because had you not been getting a ticket for speeding he wouldn't have died?
What about the guy n the truck who pulled in front of him and fled the scene? They make no mention of what he was charged with or what time he got. I bet he got a slap on the wrist, and was probably dui no license or insrance or had warants.

Officials said Grider and a female companion were on a motorcycle, eastbound on the Northwest Expressway about 3 a.m. Police said a pickup truck entered an intersection in front of the pursuing officer, who swerved to avoid the truck, crashing into a pole and then a tree.
A witness said the pickup drove through a red light before the crash, and left the scene after the accident, according to Lt. Nathan Pyle. The driver of the pickup was later located by police and is cooperating in the investigation. His identity was not released and police said a decision has not been made on whether he'll face charges.
Grider faces charges including second-degree murder, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and felony attempting to elude police.
The motorcycle Grider was driving was found abandoned about a mile from the crash. The passenger on the motorcycle, Chelsea Free, 16, is in custody.
Free was arrested on a complaint of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and booked into the Community Intervention Center, police said.
Officers spent most of the day reconstructing the accident and looking for the suspect.
Dragus was a decorated officer with the department, and had been honored witih the department's Life Saving Award in 2004 for saving the life of an infant. Dragus, whose wife is an Oklahoma City police officer, has a 5-month-old son and an 8-year-old daughter, police said.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The prime suspect in the death of an Oklahoma City police officer has been taken into custody. Sergeant Jonathan Dragus was chasing a suspect on the run when he crashed Thursday morning. He later died from his injuries. Police say the officer was chasing 22-year-old Kyle Grider.
Grider is now being questioned at the Oklahoma City Police Department. Police say they had been talking with the suspect by phone when he finally agreed to turn himself Thursday evening.
More than 12 hours after the crash, Oklahoma City police detectives are still investigating the crash that took one of their own. Some say it was Sgt. Dragus’s love for justice that cost him his life.
Around 3:00 a.m. Thursday morning Sgt. Jonathan Dragus was chasing a stolen motorcycle when he lost control of his cruiser. He was rushed to the hospital, but did not survive his injuries. He was surrounded by both of his families.
“My thoughts are with the men and women of this department that I watched [Thursday] morning and stood by his side until he died,” said Police Chief Bill Citty
Investigators spent the afternoon scouring the metro for the driver of the motorcycle. They searched from the air, on the ground, door-to-door; desperate for information about the man Sgt. Dragus was chasing when he crashed.
Capt. Jeffrey Becker says, “We have a lot of officers in the area. We've set up a perimeter. We are doing grid searches and there are a lot of things in progress right now.”
Police tell us 22-year-old Kyle Grider has been on the wrong side of the law before. Several previous arrests including burglary, reckless driving, and using stolen vehicles.
One of the last people to see and talk with the now-captured suspect was a waitress who was starting her day at the Classen Grill, a popular Oklahoma City breakfast joint.
Sharon Sands had just opened the front door at the Classen Grill when Kyle Grider came stumbling inside the restaurant.
She says he appeared roughed up and covered in blood and gasoline. Even so, the waitress didn't ask any questions.
“He grabbed a napkin when he first walked in, then he walked to the bathroom. I went and got a towel. He wrapped his arm up. He asked if he could use the telephone. I took him over to the phone and let him use it,” Sharon Sands says.
Sands says that after that phone call, Grider then walked across the street to Jimmy's Egg, after a few minutes there, he returned to the Classen Grill; only to disappear moments later.
Sgt. Dragus’ family issued a statement saying that he was a father of two young children; an 8-year-old daughter and a five-month-old son.
Sergeant Dragus' family released this statement. They say, "He was 150 percent devoted to the citizens of Oklahoma City. He was a devoted father, husband and Christian. His memory will live on in the many stories we will tell."

Frankie...first off, WHATS WITH THE CAPS?!!?! 
no one here is saying that the biker did the right thing by running from the cop, or stealing the bike
but
the fact that the cop crashed had nothing to do with him and he should NOT have been charged for friggin MURDER!...possible causes could have bin
1. the cop didn't slow down at the intersection and look both ways before crossing, like most other cops/ambulances do...he prolly just wanted to catch that dude & tackle him to the ground
2. he wasn't experienced enough to control the vehicle at those speeds
3. the trucker came outta nowhere. not everyone can hear that siren or see the lights. especially if ur bumpin music or just comin out of a corner.

the biker should go to jail for
1. running
and
2. stealing a bike
but WTF, chargin him with murder is just ridiculous!
no one here is saying that the biker did the right thing by running from the cop, or stealing the bike
but
the fact that the cop crashed had nothing to do with him and he should NOT have been charged for friggin MURDER!...possible causes could have bin
1. the cop didn't slow down at the intersection and look both ways before crossing, like most other cops/ambulances do...he prolly just wanted to catch that dude & tackle him to the ground
2. he wasn't experienced enough to control the vehicle at those speeds

the guy on the bike sounds like a douche, if he didnt get into this **** it would have been something else, **** him, let him rot....come on, stealing a bike with a sixteen y.o. on the back.....in general im useally ftp but in this case i feel bad for the cops kid and wife......

Everyone needs to blame someone, noone takes responsibility for their actions.
Why not sue the Police Dept for not training him to safely pursue, or to have a pursuit policy that helped allow this to happen.
How is this not involuntary manslaughter instead of 2nd degree murder??
