Gixxer Cam Chain Tensioner

I have a '98 Gixxer with 18K miles and I have a feeling my cam chain tensioner is whack. I just had my valves done but My idle will drop to the point that it stalls at idle and then when I adjust the idle up to 1000 - 1200 it will ride fine for a while then I'll pull up at a stop light and be idling at 3000rpm. Then I turn the idle down and a little while later it's dropped to stall, then I turn it up again and ....well you get the picture. Anyway, now after a few burnouts it bogs real bad when I leave a light. It will bog to the point that I look like a complete squid killing my bike. Does this sound like a timing problem? If so I should probably change my cam chain tensioner since I hear they are prone to go bad. Now the real question. Has anyone done it themselves? and How hard is it to do? I basically am proud of myself when I can properly tie my shoes, so needless to say I'm not very mechanically inclined. Any help would be appreciated.

shaggy, you posted on a different thread that you own a 98 gixxer service manual, so use it and it wont be hard, i have used them before and they are pretty easy to understand, you also stated that you are not very much mechanically inclined, but all it takes is a little patience, and pay attention when you take it apart, and it will go back together real easy, just make sure you do not have any bolts left over!!!!!
but no i have never changed out that particular part!!

The sevice manual makes it look pretty complicated. Most service manuals tend to give a bit too much information in my opinion. The sevice manual tells me to match up certain links in the chain to certain teeth on the gears and lets face it, I end up with extra parts when I put a condom on so I think maybe I should have a mechanic do it.

You'll know if your CCT is on the way out because it will make shitloadsof noise at idle. Ever heard a diesel truck idle? That's what it'll sound like.

It's got to be on it's way out. It's more of a clickclickclick sound. Not quite like a diesel though. I thought maybe my valves were outa whack by the sounds of it, but they were all in spec.

Update

It wasn't the cam chain tensioner. It was clogged slow idle jets. Simple fix is to drain the carb bowls, ride, drain, ride, drain, ride, etc. untill the problem goes away. Yipppeeee

Or you could do it right...

Take the carbs off and clean them out -- spray the jets with carb cleaner and run compressed air through them.

Also, stop filling your tank up with **** gas in podunk towns -- I bet that's how the dirt got in there.
