z50 transmission question
#1
Is it worth it?
Well I think i'm gonna buy this 1979 z50 a local guy is selling. He wants $400 for it. Its in pretty good shape, only problem is there is a transmission rattle when in third gear. How hard and how much do you think it would cost to fix this? Is it worth $400 with the transmission rattle?

Re: z50 transmission question
Well can ya point me in the direction of some deals then? Most dealers i've seen don't sell used xr's below 800-900. Most xr's I see on ebay go for atleast $700. If there is a good deal somewhere, cheaper than $400 for a newer bike, please post a link.....
Here is a pic of it, I think it would be fun. But is $400 really too much? Some other opinions would be nice....

Re: z50 transmission question
Ok so then there aren't any better deals. So half of the price of a new one isn't too bad... I don't want to blow 800 on a toy. I'd rather spend 400 on bulletproofing my f3 and just rock the old fiddy for cheap. That is, unless you do know of some newer bikes cheaper than $400 as you said earlier.

Re: z50 transmission question
I just looked up the z50's on kelly blue book. The farthest they list the z50 to is 1984. A used 1984 retails for $615. So I don't think a 79 for $400 is too terrible. Maybe closer to $300 would be a little better. I'm sorry to be a pain its just I don't want to spend alot of money... but i also am not looking to get screwed. I'm sure I could find a "good deal" on a newer bike, but I don't think i'm gonna find one for less than $400-$500...... You guys really think I'd be able to get one that cheap? I know alot of people are starting to rebuild the old 50's and restore them so they are starting to go for more. And new xr's are still like $800.

Re: z50 transmission question
Well i'm still talking with the guy. I had made him an offer of $400 but he turned it down cause he wants to wait till the ebay auction ends and see if he can get more. But since no one here thinks its worth $400, what do you think it is worth? Since he turned down my offer at first I might end up only offering him like $300 or so if you think thats all its worth.... I'm starting to think I should just keep my eye out for a xr50 in the area for $800 or so...

Re: z50 transmission question
I didn't want to blow that much on a toy either man, but once I dropped the $900 on a '04 CRF50 a month ago, I realized I should've done it a year ago. 50's bring back the kid in you, and I can ride that 50 all day long if it weren't for the a**hole neighbors calling the police all the time!

Re: z50 transmission question
I have a fiddy exactly like that. The thing is a tank riding in the woods and stuff. I don't know how much my dad paid for our, but I'm sure it was less than that (my dad is really cheap and wont buy something unless it's dirt cheap or free). I think the tranny problem might be in your clutch. Mine use to not shift in 2nd and rattle like you said unless you shifted it hard. I adjusted it and it workd fine. See if the guy will let you take it to a Honda shop to see what the problem is and if it can be fixed. If it's fixable without splitting the cases or dumping a lotta money in it buy it! You wouldn't believe how much people will pay for a clean factory stock vintage minibike.

Re: z50 transmission question
My friend has a 79' z50 too, it's fun as hell to ride around but his tranny is ****ed. You can shift fine up to 3rd, but downshifting is a big pain, you have to sit and hit neutral and then up and then back down 3 times to get back to 1st. So I either just wheelie it around in 1st or 2nd, or ride around in 3rd pinned. $400 isn't worth it though, I see them on ebay for 300 auction ended all the time, check your local classified ads for them.
